I-Play: Fast and Furious Streets

INFO : Do you have the guts to put your ride on the line? In the Fast and the Furious: Street “it doesn’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile,” to score street cred and your opponent’s car.

Fill up your garage with some choice wheels if you win, but be prepared to take the bus home if you loose. Now test your street racing talents on mobile in 4 different types of races: drift racing, drag racing, point 2 point and police chase.

Believe it or not but The Fast and The Furious is mobiles biggest selling franchise with over 13 million downloads. With figures like that, it’s no surprise that Iplay have brought this fifth title. Unlike other developers, they haven’t rested on their laurels and brought out a quick and easy sequel. Instead we have a fast, smooth driving game with plenty of improvements.

As before, the game is all about underground racing and this time the game is split into 4 distinct challenges; drift race, road race, drag race and finally a cop chase. Each event has slightly different controls and different tactics need to be used to succeed.

There are two main aims in Arcade mode; firstly win all the races and secondly win all the cars. For each race, apart from cop chase, you must put your car on the line and bet your pink slip (your vehicle registration document or V5 in the UK) against one of the other racers. If you beat them to the finish line then their car goes in your garage and is free for you to choose for later races. Lose the race and you lose your car (you can always select restart before you cross the finish line if you think you might lose).

There are 16 events in total but 32 cars to win and even my simple brain realises that you need to race some events more than once if you want to unlock everything. It would be a little boring if all 32 cars drove the same so Iplay have introduced some stats to mix things up. The stats breakdown into ratings for their drift, drag and racing abilities. Naturally you must consider these when selecting your and your opponents cars and give yourself the best chance of winning the bet.

And it's often tossed around by game makers who simply throw in a few letterboxed cutscenes and minimalist heads-up displays and then call it a day. Developer Quantic Dream's Indigo Prophecy is a game that actually gives cinematic gameplay some context, as well as some real heartfelt meaning. More movie with an interactive progression than video game pretending to be a movie, Indigo Prophecy eschews practically any modern gameplay convention in favor of a significantly more subtle mechanical interface. You take part in every action in Indigo Prophecy--from the biggest fight sequence, to the most minor of day-to-day tasks--and you do it all with simple movements of the analog sticks on your PC gamepad or with some quick button presses that are more akin to a rhythm game than a typical third-person adventure. But where Indigo Prophecy truly shines is in its story, which is a deep, captivating, and sometimes disturbing tale of one average man's journey to solve a murder that he himself committed.

The average man in question is Lucas Kane, a handsome but worn gentleman who lives his life as any IT professional in the great city of New York would. Kane's life takes a dark turn one night, however, when he decides to visit a local diner. In the very opening scene of the game we find Lucas sitting in a bathroom stall, convulsing and carving bizarre symbols into his forearms. An unlucky schmo happens into the bathroom during this period, and Lucas, seemingly unable to control his actions, attacks him, stabbing him multiple times. Moments after the killing, Lucas returns to his senses, only to be equal parts horrified and stupefied by his actions. From here you take control of Lucas, and it's up to you to get him the hell out of there.

This opening sequence gives you an excellent glimpse into how thoroughly intertwined Indigo Prophecy's plot and gameplay are. Presented with a corpse, a murder weapon, and one of NYPD's finest sitting out in the restaurant, you must decide how to proceed. Should you take the time to hide the body, ditch the weapon, clean yourself up, and try to casually make your way out of there? Or will you simply make a run for it as quickly as possible? You can do any or all of these things, and the outcomes will vary from a very quick game-over screen to your getting Kane the hell out of Dodge. And first and foremost, that's what Indigo Prophecy is about: choice. Every decision made and every question asked takes the story in a slightly different direction. Of course, in most cases these changes are merely cosmetic, simply letting the core scene play out marginally differently while ultimately pushing you toward the same goal. But in more than a few cases, your choices will drastically change the flow of the story.

And what incredible directions they can be. It is with no amount of exaggeration that we state Indigo Prophecy features one of the best stories so far this year, as well as a remarkable amount of character depth. The game is like an unholy mixing of The X-Files, The Dead Zone, and CSI, with sprinklings of The Matrix and Shenmue thrown in for good measure. But the incredible thing is that it never flies off the rails, no matter how ambitious its intentions are. The story dives into some truly morbid territory, with its ritualistic killings, deeply troubled protagonist, and downright intriguing backstory. We won't give any of the main plot points away, but needless to say, there's an awful lot more to Lucas Kane's plight than mere loss of mental and bodily control, including a series of past, similar murders and a mysterious cold front that's burying the city in snow.

You won't just experience Lucas Kane's story, either. Early on you'll be introduced to two other main characters, Detectives Carla Valenti and Tyler Miles. The detectives are the ones assigned to the murder Kane commits, and right from the start we get to know these characters just about as intimately as we do Kane. Carla professes herself to be the obsessive type, transfixing herself on any case that comes her way. Tyler's more the streetwise type--the cop you'd expect to see shaking down narcotics informants and busting up gangs during the day, while clubbing it up at night. Carla and Tyler are both playable throughout the story, and it makes for an interesting scenario. While Kane is clearly not culpable for his wrongdoings, here you are playing two law enforcement officers on the opposite side of the law from this accused murderer, with no understanding of the circumstances beyond the fact that one man killed another. In effect, you're helping two sides that are both intentionally and unintentionally working against each other.

Road Rash PC

Road Rash has long been a favorite among those gamers with a penchant for blood and speed.
Originally released for the Sega Genesis earlier, the first version sported unprecedented graphics and action that was fast enough to give the player a real adrenaline rush. No other motorcycle game before Road Rash had been this realistic, and certainly none had incorporated combat. Each of RR's many incarnations since has offered graphic improvements upon the original and has taken advantage of the varied platforms' power, but all have failed to be as inspiring as they could have been.

Until recently, the game lacked a critical competitive element;
after all, it's really not much fun to wail on a fellow "rasher" with a chain if you know they're just part of the game. If that "rasher" is being controlled by your roommate or your girlfriend, however, the action takes on a whole new dimension. With the Windows 95 version of Road Rash and its eight-player capability, the old standard now has the power to addict.

Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360)

Stepping off a boat in the shoes of illegal immigrant Niko Bellic as he arrives in Liberty City at the start of Grand Theft Auto IV, you can tell immediately that Rockstar North's latest offering is something quite special. Yes, this is another GTA game in which you'll likely spend the bulk of your time stealing cars and gunning down cops and criminals, but it's also much more than that. GTAIV is a game with a compelling and nonlinear storyline, a game with a great protagonist who you can't help but like, and a game that boasts a plethora of online multiplayer features in addition to its lengthy story mode. It's not without some flaws, but GTAIV is undoubtedly the best Grand Theft Auto yet.

One of the many things that set GTAIV apart from its predecessors is Liberty City, which is more convincing as a living, breathing urban environment than anything that you've seen in a game before, and bears little resemblance to its namesake in 2001's GTAIII. Liberty's diverse population believably attempts to go about its daily business, seemingly unaware that several criminal factions are at war in the city. Niko has no such luck. He's compelled to start working for one of the factions shortly after arriving, when he learns that his cousin Roman has some potentially fatal gambling debts. Niko's military experience makes him a useful freelancer for employers in the business of killing each other, and though his reluctance to carry out their orders is often apparent, he does whatever is asked of him in the hope that completing missions for other people will ultimately give him the means to complete his own.
